National Employee Appreciation Day

19 years and counting

Today, on National Employee Appreciation Day, the Dixon celebrates one of its longest-serving staff members, security guard Shawn Jones. She has been an integral part of the camaraderie and culture of the Dixon for 19 years and counting! Read below as she reflects on the institution's growth, its diverse exhibitions, and her engaging experiences at the museum.

When reflecting on your time here, what is something you’ve appreciated?

“The staff brings so many memories; they’re always so friendly and nice. I've seen the Dixon change over time—they have acquired many more paintings in a variety of styles. I love that every three and a half months, the art changes, and it becomes a different experience.”

Her personal favorite in the Dixon’s collection is a painting by an unknown artist titled Judith with the Head of Holofernes.

“I love the one of Judith that's above the stairs. She's a strong woman, the way that she fought for her people. It's just breathtakingly beautiful and sends a powerful message.”

Journey to The Dixon

Originally from Chicago, Shawn attended business college and studied security. She says that was all part of the journey that led her to the Dixon.

“I went to business college—it was the craziest thing. I worked security in lots of government buildings in Illinois and Indiana. In those settings, it’s more high-stress, and you must watch people closely; they come in with a particular attitude. I love working where people are ready to explore and enjoy. So, it's a whole different experience.”

Special Memories

Can you tell us a little bit about your role and why it’s important to you?

“We're here to protect the artwork. There are small challenges along the way, but you just roll with the punches. I get to see people of all types. I enjoy helping those who may have mental or physical disabilities and making sure they are treated equally.”

Shawn stays knowledgeable about all the art in the collection and said it typically takes her about a week to memorize and learn the different art labels in the galleries.

Has there been an exhibition that you remember fondly?

“At one time, we had a teapot exhibition. Everyone’s opinions on these teapots were just mind-blowing—the things they would say! One woman said, ‘Look at that teapot. Ma’am, can you help me put that in my purse?’ The thievery! Another visitor said, ‘This is just not my cup of tea.’ I enjoy hearing the ongoing commentary on the art. I've heard some really good one-liners—people have fun.”

Shawn has called Memphis home for almost 30 years, and she believes all Memphians should experience the Dixon’s magic.

First of all, we're free—can't get no better than being free! Second, it's for the culture. For visitors, it all depends on what they’re interested in. The Dixon is full of different things for different people.”

Favorite events and advice

Is there a particular event you enjoy the most at the Dixon?

“I would have to say Women in the Arts. Oh yeah, me and my daughter love coming to that. I like the fact that they will shuttle you here and there. I plan to be there Saturday! Also, summertime or spring here with those tulips—it’s just beautiful. There's nowhere else like it in Memphis.”

What is your advice to someone that might want to work at the Dixon, even join your team?

“The staff is wonderful. They get along, and it’s plain fun, okay? And it's very exciting. You get to see a lot of different exhibits. If you love art, it’s for you!”

Do you plan to be at the Dixon another 20 years?

“You know, look—I’ll be here as long as they'll have me! This is the only job where I’ve thought, ‘I don’t mind waking up and spending my time here.’”
