Spring in the Bluff City

Hidden Gem Greenhouse

Discover the Dixon

Memphis is a city where gardens thrive, due to its humid summers, mild winters, and a fair amount of rain year-round. How often do Memphians take pause to truly appreciate the nature and flora around them? The spring season in the Bluff City puts natural beauty on full display. Public spaces like The Dixon Gallery and Gardens and its neighbors across the street at the Memphis Botanic Garden offer stunning landscapes, displaying the city’s floral artistry

“Dixon's Gardens shine year-round, but Sharp says spring showcases an explosion of tulips. He also noted the impressive hardwood forest. A cutting garden near the Dixon greenhouse serves a dual purpose: Workers get the rotating collection of fresh flowers inside the museum while visitors see a variety of perennials they could grow in their gardens. In addition, the garden includes a pavilion and outdoor area for weddings and receptions, available for rental,” writes Mark Russell of USA Today.

If you’re a garden lover, or simply looking for a peaceful escape in Memphis, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens offers that retreat. Often seen as a “hidden gem” the 17-acre gardens are easily found off Park Ave.

“We have a dynamic exhibition program, a very active education program, and we are always, everyday completely free of charge! So it’s a very easy way to experience world-class culture right here in Memphis,” said Kevin Sharp, Linda W. and S. Herbert Rhea Director.

A Legacy of Art and Education

The Dixon’s origins trace back to 1958, when Hugo Norton Dixon established The Hugo Dixon Trust, a charitable foundation. After Hugo and his wife, Margaret Oates Dixon, passed away in 1974, their estate—including their residence, a 17-acre property, and an extensive art collection—was transformed into the Dixon Gallery and Gardens.

Over the years since its official opening in 1976, it has expanded significantly, adding new galleries, a museum shop, the museum's café Park + Cherry, an auditorium, and spaces to accommodate educational programs and events.

With its rich history, stunning landscapes, and dynamic exhibitions, the Dixon continues to be a cultural beacon in the city. Read more from USA Today.
