Become a Docent

So, you want to be a docent?

If you are a continuous learner, are interested in art, history, or education, we need you! Join the Dixon’s Docent team and create meaningful experiences for your community while learning, making new friends and surrounding yourself with beautiful and meaningful art.

Important skills in a Docent:

  • Enthusiasm for art, art history, history, and community engagement
  • Effective interpersonal abilities
  • Practiced communication
  • Continuous learning
  • Access to email and digital communication
  • Complete and pass a background check
  • Multi-lingual is a plus

Additionally, applicants should be open to commit for one year, for at least 5 hours per month of training and interpretation. Must be available during the following 10-week training course with Public Programs Coordinator, Lacy Mitcham.

What a Docent does

  • Leads guided visits for different ages.
  • Attends Docent training sessions.
  • Participates in Ask Me (about this artwork) at Dixon events.
  • Attends exhibition Lectures and Munch & Learn sessions.
  • Assists Public Programs Coordinator with group visits/tour evaluations.
  • Mentors new Docents.
  • Volunteers at Dixon events.
