Longtime Memphis artist Larry Edwards has said that the only people that like his work are “children and truck drivers.” This summer, Edwards brings his dazzling and comical works to the Dixon with his show, Three Themes. Drawing upon the artistic social commentary of 18th-century British artist William Hogarth, Edwards creates colorful works that serve as cautionary tales against the foibles of human nature, though he often uses animals or fantastical objects in place of actual human presence. In Three Themes, Edwards’ presents works from three bodies of work, his ‘Pinocchio,’ ‘Side Show Freaks,’ and ‘Battles’ series, all of which work together to become the artist’s treatise on morality.
Exhibitions sponsored by Suzanne and Neely Mallory & Mary and Charles Wurtzburger.
